computertips and hackingtechniques

Top Ten Tips To Improve System Speed

1.Let your PC boot up completely before opening any applications.

2.Refresh the desktop after closing any application. This will remove any unused files from the RAM.

3.Do not set very large file size images as your wallpaper. Do not keep a wallpaper at all if your PC is low on RAM (less than 64 MB).

4.Do not clutter your Desktop with a lot of shortcuts. Each shortcut on the desktop uses up to 500 bytes of RAM

5.Empty the recycle bin regularly. The files are not really deleted from your hard drive until you empty the recycle bin.

6.Delete the temporary internet files regularly.

7.Defragment your hard drive once every two months. This will free up a lot of space on your hard drive and rearrange the files so that your applications run faster.

8.Always make two partitions in your hard drive. Install all large Softwares (like PSP, Photoshop, 3DS Max etc) in the second partition. Windows uses all the available empty space in C drive as virtual memory when your Computer RAM is full. Keep the C Drive as empty as possible.

9.When installing new Softwares disable the option of having a tray icon. The tray icons use up available RAM, and also slow down the booting of your PC. Also disable the option of starting the application automatically when the PC boots. You can disable these options later on also from the Tools or preferences menu in your application.

10. Protect your PC from dust. Dust causes the CPU cooling fan to jam and slow down thereby gradually heating your CPU and affecting the processing speed. Use compressed air to blow out any dust from the CPU. Never use vacuum.

RAM IS THE WORKING AREA (DESKTOP) OF THE CPU, KEEP IT AS EMPTY AND UNCLUTTERED AS POSSIBLE!

Sometimes some of your friends who appear offline in yahoo messenger may not be actually offline, they may in the 'Invisible' mode. This maybe if they are trying to ignore you or are too busy to talk to anyone.

There is this small trick that you can use to find out what the truth is.

Firstly open your yahoo messenger main window and double click on the name of the person whom you want to check. The chat window will open obviously.

Click IMVironment button, select See all IMVironments, select Yahoo! Tools or Interactive Fun, and click on Doodle.
After loading the Doodle imvironment there can be two possibilities

1.If the user is offline Doodle are will show this "waiting for your friend to load Doodle" continuously .See in the picture below:

2. If the user is online (but in invisible mode), after few seconds (it can take up to one minute, depending on your connection speed), you should get a blank page like in the picture below. So you know that the user is online

HOW TO CLONE THE HARD DRIVE

How to Clone a Hard Drive

Did know that you could clone your current Hard Drive without having to by extra software? Maybe you didn't know that all that you needed, was already set up on your current system? Well, it is... and if you follow this tut, you shouldn't have much of a problem.

Make sure that you have a Master and a Slave setup on your system. The Slave drive, in this case, is where all the data on the Master is going to go to.

First: Perform a Scandisk your Master drive and follow that with a thorough Defrag. If you have an Antivirus program, do a thorough sweep with the AV first, then do the Scandisk, followed by the Defrag.

Second: Do the same thing to the target drive, as you did the Master: Scandisk then a thorough Defrag.

Third: Right-click on the Target drive and click on Format. When the box comes up, click your mouse onto the "Full" button.

Fourth: After Formatting the Target drive, run a Scandisk again and click on the button that says "Autofix Errors".

Fifth: In this final part, you might want to cut-and-paste to code in, unless you are sure that you can do it without making any mistakes:

Click on the "Start" button, then click on the "Run..." button, then place the following into the Runbox:

"XCOPY C:\*.*D:\ /c/h/e/k/r" (minus the quotes, of course) then press the "Enter" button.

If you receive an error message, then remove the space from between XCOPY and C:\

Anything that should happen to come up in the DOS box, just click "Y" for "Yes". When its all finished, pull the original Master from the system, designate the Slave as the Master (change your jumpers), then check your new Master out.

This tut has worked and has been tested on all systems except for Windows 2000, so you really shouldn't have any problems. If, by any chance, you should come across a snag, message me and I'll walk you through it.

INCREASING OF BAND WIDTH:

Microsoft reserves 20% of your available bandwidth for their own purposes like Windows Updates and interrogating your PC etc

You can get it back:

Click Start then Run and type "gpedit.msc" without quotes. This opens the group policy editor. Then go to:
Local Computer Policy
then Computer Configuration
then Administrative Templates then Network then QOS Packet Scheduler and then to Limit Reservable Bandwidth.
Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the 'Explain' tab i.e."By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default."
So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO. This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%.It works on Win 2000 as well.

another one for increase the speed

There is a setting located in your windows registry called the Maximum Transfer Unit (MTU). This determines the size of the packets of data sent between your and your server. In Windows 95, this setting is has a value of 1,500 bytes when the actual size of internet packets is 1,000 bytes. This can sometimes slow things down. To remedy the situation, simply follow these steps:

In the registry editor (Start > Run > regedit.exe), navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\NetTrans. In the NetTrans folder you should find another folder named "000x" in which x represents a fourth digit. Right-click on the "000x" folder and select New and StringValue. Rename the item that appears in the panel on the right side to MaxMTU, then double-click it to bring up the Edit String box and give it a velue of 1002.

Remember to keep playing with the MaxMTU value until you feel that your internet connection has greatly sped up. Some people report huge speed gains using this tricks, while others hardly notice a difference. In any case, it's definetly worth a try.

INCRESE BOOT UP SPEED:
Boot your Computer Faster
Many computers take a lot of time to boot (or start ).This is due to many reasons.
Some slight changes can do wonders for your system:

1.Press start->run then type msconfig and press enter.

Go to the startup tab. Here you will see a list of startup items. These are all the programs that automatically start when you boot your PC. It is these that slow down the boot up process.

So uncheck all the unwanted items like ms-office, messengers other utilities that u may not need at startup). Don't uncheck your antivirus software.

Restart your Pc to and see for yourself, your pc will now boot fast

2.A great new feature in Microsoft Windows XP is the ability to do a boot defragment. This places all boot files next to each other on the disk to allow for faster booting. By default this option is enabled, but on some systems it is not, so below is the information on how to turn it on:

Go to Start Menu and Click Run
Type in regedit then click ok
Find "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Dfrg\BootOpt imizeFunction"
Select "Enable" from the list on the right
Right on it and select "Modify"
Change the value to Y .
Reboot your Pc and see the change yourself.

3.SPEED UP BOOT BY DISABLING UNUSED PORTS.!!

You may have tried many tweaks like modifying windows XP start-up applications, prefetches, unload DLLs method, etc. And yes those methods do work for me.
I have just accidentally found out another way to give you an extra boost in windows XP's boot performance. This is done by disabling your unused devices in
Device Manager. for example, if you don't have input devices that are connected to one of your USB's or COM ports, disabling them will give you an extra performance boost in booting. Go to Control Panel -> System -> Hardware tab -> device manager Disable devices that you don't use for your PC and then restart.

INCREASING BROWSING SPEED AND PROCESSING SPEED:

Make Your Windows Fast As Never Before

Disable CD Autorun
( WinXP PRO Only)

1) Click Start, Run and enter GPEDIT.MSC

2) Go to Computer Configuration, Administrative Templates, System.

3) Locate the entry for Turn autoplay off and modify it as you desire.

Speed Up Browsing
When you connect to a web site your computer sends information back and forth. Some of this information deals with resolving the site name to an IP address, the stuff that TCP/IP really deals with, not words. This is DNS information and is used so that you will not need to ask for the site location each and every time you visit the site. Although Windows XP and Windows XP have a pretty efficient DNS cache, you can increase its overall performance by increasing its size. You can do this with the registry entries below:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Dnscache\Parameters]
"CacheHashTableBucketSize"=dword:00000001
"CacheHashTableSize"=dword:00000180
"MaxCacheEntryTtlLimit"=dword:0000fa00
"MaxSOACacheEntryTtlLimit"=dword:0000012d

Make a new text file and rename it to dnscache.reg. Then copy and paste the above into it and save it. Merge it into the registry.

DISABLE INDEXING SERVICES

Indexing Services is a small little program that uses large amounts of RAM and can often make a computer endlessly loud and noisy. This system process indexes and updates lists of all the files that are on your computer. It does this so that when you do a search for something on your computer, it will search faster by scanning the index lists. If you don't search your computer often, or even if you do search often, this system service is completely unnecessary. To disable do the following:

1. Go to Start
2. Click Settings
3. Click Control Panel
4. Double-click Add/Remove Programs
5. Click the Add/Remove Window Components
6. Uncheck the Indexing services
7. Click Next

OPTIMISE DISPLAY SETTINGS

Windows XP can look sexy but displaying all the visual items can waste system resources. To optimize:

1.Go to Start
2. Click Settings
3. Click Control Panel
4. Click System
5. Click Advanced tab
6. In the Performance tab click Settings
7. Leave only the following ticked:
- Show shadows under menus
- Show shadows under mouse pointer
- Show translucent selection rectangle
- Use drop shadows for icons labels on the desktop
- Use visual styles on windows and buttons

SPEEDUP FOLDER BROWSING

You may have noticed that everytime you open my computer to browse folders that there is a slight delay. This is because Windows XP automatically searches for network files and printers everytime you open Windows Explorer. To fix this and to increase browsing significantly:

1. Open My Computer
2. Click on Tools menu
3. Click on Folder Options
4. Click on the View tab.
5. Uncheck the Automatically search for network folders and printers check box
6. Click Apply
7. Click Ok
8. Reboot your computer

REMOVE THE DESKTOP PICTURE

Your desktop background consumes a fair amount of memory and can slow the loading time of your system. Removing it will improve performance.

1. Right click on Desktop and select Properties
2. Select the Desktop tab
3. In the Background window select None
4. Click Ok

DISABLE UNNECESSARY SERVICES

Because Windows XP has to be all things to all people it has many services running that take up system resources that you will never need. Below is a list of services that can be disabled on most machines:

Alerter
Clipbook
Computer Browser
Distributed Link Tracking Client
Fast User Switching
Help and Support - (If you use Windows Help and Support leave this enabled)
Human Interface Access Devices
Indexing Service
IPSEC Services
Messenger
Netmeeting Remote Desktop Sharing (disabled for extra security)
Portable Media Serial Number
Remote Desktop Help Session Manager (disabled for extra security)
Remote Procedure Call Locator
Remote Registry (disabled for extra security)
Remote Registry Service
Secondary Logon
Routing & Remote Access (disabled for extra security)
Server
SSDP Discovery Service - (Unplug n' Pray will disable this)
Telnet
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper
Upload Manager
Universal Plug and Play Device Host
Windows Time
Wireless Zero Configuration (Do not disable if you use a wireless network)
Workstation
To disable these services:

Go to Start and then Run and type "services.msc"
Doubleclick on the service you want to change
Change the startup type to 'Disable"

REMOVE ANNOYING DELETE CONFIRMATION MESSAGES

Although not strictly a performance tweak I love this fix as it makes my machine 'feel' faster. I hate the annoying 'are you sure?' messages that XP displays, especially if I have to use a laptop touchpad to close them. To remove these messages:

1. Right-click on the 'Recycle Bin' on the desktop and then click 'Properties'

2. Clear the 'Display Delete Confirmation Dialog' check box and click 'Ok'

If you do accidently delete a file don't worry as all is not lost. Just go to your Recycle Bin and 'Restore' the file.

MAKE MENUS LOAD FASTER:

MAKE YOUR MENUS LOAD FASTER

This is one of my favorite tweaks as it makes a huge difference to how fast your machine will 'feel'. What this tweak does is remove the slight delay between clicking on a menu and XP displaying the menu.

Go to Start then Run
Type 'Regedit' then click 'Ok'
Find "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\"
Select "MenuShowDelay"
Right click and select "Modify'
Reduce the number to around "100"
This is the delay time before a menu is opened. You can set it to "0" but it can make windows really hard to use as menus will open if you just look at them - well move your mouse over them anyway. I tend to go for anywhere between 50-150 depending on my mood.

RENAMING A MULTIPLE FOLDERS

Rename Multiple Files at Once

When you download photos from your digital camera, they often have unrecognizable names. You can rename several similar files at once with the following procedure. This also works for renaming other types of files.

1.Open the My Pictures folder. (Click Start, and then click My Pictures.) Or open another folder containing files that you want to rename.

2.Select the files you want to rename. If the files you want are not adjacent in the file list, press and hold CTRL, and then click each item to select it.

3.On the File menu, click Rename.

4.Type the new name, and then press ENTER.

All of the files in the series will be named in sequence using the new name you type. For example, if you type Birthday, the first will be named Birthday and subsequent files in the series will be named Birthday (1), Birthday (2), and so on. To specify the starting number for the series, type the starting number in parentheses after the new file name. The files in the series will be numbered in sequence starting with the number you type. For example, if you type Birthday (10), the other files will be named Birthday (11), Birthday (12), and so on.

SINGLE CLICK SHUT DOWN:

Single Click Shutdown
Did you know that in Windows XP you can shut down your computer from the (eventually DOS prompt) command line box? Moreover, you can do this by clicking your mouse only once.

All you need to do is... right-click on an empty Desktop spot -> select New -> Shortcut -> type shutdown followed by a space, and then enter one or more of the parameters listed below -> click Next -> type a suggestive name for your new shortcut -> finally, click Finish.

This is the Shutdown.exe (located in %systemroot%\System32, usually C:\Windows\System32) syntax:

shutdown [-i|-l|-s|-r|-a] [-f] [-m \\computername] [-t xx] [-c "Text"] [-d[u][p]:xx:yy]>

Valid command line switches:

-a = Abort system shutdown in progress ONLY IF the -t xx timeout option was already set to ANY value other than 0. ALL switches except -l and -m are ignored during abort.

-c "Text" = Text comment (case insensitive) to be displayed in the Message area of the System Shutdown window. MUST be enclosed between quotes. Maximum allowed 127 ASCII characters.

-d [u][p]:xx:yy = Reason code for shutdown:
u = User code.
p = Planned shutdown code.
xx = Major reason code. Positive integer number less than 256.
yy = Minor reason code. Positive integer number less than 65536.

-f = Force running applications to close without warning.

-i = Display the shutdown interface (GUI). MUST be the first option!

-l = Log off the current user of the local computer (default action). Can NOT be used with the -m option unless the current user has Sysadmin rights, in which case the -m switch takes precedence.

\\computername = Remote/network computer name (most always case sensitive) to log off/restart/shut down. Current user MUST have Sysadmin rights to be allowed to use this switch!

-s = Shut down the local computer.

-r = Shut down and restart (reboot) the local computer.

-t xx = Set shutdown timer to timeout for xx seconds. IF NOT specified defaults to 20 seconds. Allowed values between 0 and 99 seconds. The -a switch is the ONLY one that CAN be used during the timeout period

NOTES:
The dash (-) in front of these switches can be replaced by a forward slash (/).
Spaces are NOT required to separate the shutdown command from ANY following switches, but ARE required to separate ANY switch from its following parameter(s), if any.
For example:

shutdown -s -c "Shutting down!" -t 3

tells your computer to shutdown after waiting for 3 seconds while the System Shutdown window will display text above in the Message area.

Optional: after you're done creating your customized shortcut for shutdown -> right-click on it -> select Properties -> enter your desired key "combo" in the Shortcut Key box (e.g. Ctrl + Alt + End) -> click OK/Apply.
From now on just left-click on your shutdown shortcut or hit that key combination to turn off/restart/log off your computer.

VISTA REQUIREMENTS

Hardware Requirements
According to Microsoft corp, computers capable of running Windows Vista are classified as Vista Capable and Vista Premium Ready.

A Vista Capable or equivalent PC needs to have at minimum an 800 MHz processor, 512 MB RAM and a DirectX 9 class graphics card. A computer that meets these requirements will be capable of running all editions of Windows Vista although some of the special features and high end graphics options may require additional or more advanced hardware.

A Vista Premium Ready PC will take advantage of Vista's "high-end" features but will need at least a 1.0 GHz processor, 1 GB main memory, and an Aero-compatible graphics card with at least 128 MB graphics memory and supporting the new Windows Display Driver Model. The company also offers Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor from its website to determine the ability of a PC to run Vista in its various guises. The utility runs on Windows XP (with Service Pack 2) and Windows Vista.
Microsoft lists some Vista capable hardware on their website. The "Windows Vista Premium Ready" laptops they specify have Intel Core 2 Duo T5500 or above CPUs and 1 GB memory.

Windows Vista's "Basic" and "Classic" interfaces will work with virtually any graphics hardware that supports Windows XP or 2000; accordingly, most discussion around Vista's graphics requirements centers on those for the Windows Aero interface. As of Windows Vista Beta 2, the NVIDIA GeForce FX family and later, the ATI Radeon 9500 and later, Intel's GMA 950 integrated graphics, and a handful of VIA chipsets and S3 Graphics discrete chips are supported.Though some XGI Technology Volari chips were DirectX 9 (including the Volari V3XT which was available in PCI cards), with XGI's exit from the graphics card business it appears none of its chips are supported as of Vista Beta 2. A PCI Express (PCIe) video card is not a requirement for Windows Aero, but Microsoft recommends PCIe video over an AGP device due to the interface's greater bandwidth. There are some PCI cards available that are compatible with Windows Vista as well.

YOU TUBE GOOGLE VIDEO HACK

This is the most common question among video enthusiasts - they want to split a large FLV video file into smaller chunks for editing or resharing only the interesting tidbits on the internet. To break an FLV file, get the free FLV Parser - a tiny command-line tool to split FLVs into pieces. Its intended use is to convert a large FLV into a series of shorter FLVs based on a series of millisecond-based timecodes. Using the -s switch will split the audio and video of the outputted files; the audio track will be extracted as a series of MP3 files, and the short FLVs produced will have no audio track at all.

ENABLE RIGHT CLICK ON BROWSER:

Internet Explorer

Lots of web sites have disabled the right click function of the mouse button… it’s really, really annoying. This is done so that you don’t steal (via right-click->save picture) their photos or images or any other goodies. Unfortunately, it disables ALL right-click functionality: copy, paste, open in new window.

It’s easy to change, assuming your using IE 6:
Click “Tools”->“Internet Options”
Click the “Security” tab
Click “Custom Level”
Scroll down to the “Scripting” section
Set “Active Scripting” to “disable”
Click “Ok” a couple of times.

You’ll probably want to turn this back to “enable” when your done… ‘cause generally the javascript enhances a website.

Mozilla Firefox

1. Go to Tools > Options and select Web Options from the left panel.
2. You would see that Enable Javascript is checked by default. Uncheck it and click OK.
3. Right Clicking should now be enabled on websites that do not allow it.
4. If this does not work, you could disable java altogether from the check box in the same window.

Opera

1. Go to Tools Preferences and select the Advanced Tab.
2. From the left panel, select Content
3. You would see that “Enable Javascript is checked by default. Uncheck it and click OK.
4. Right Clicking should now be enabled on websites that do not allow it.
5. If this does not work, you could disable java altogether, also from the Content tab.

MAKING FIREFOX THAN EVER:

1. Type “about:config” into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining
network.http.proxy.pipelining
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set “network.http.pipelining” to “true”

Set “network.http.proxy.pipelining” to “true”

Set “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer.
Name it “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” and set its value to “0”.
This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves

HACKING OF RAPID SHRE :

2.Open the command prompt (Start – Run – cmd.exe)
3.Run the following simple commands:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
4. Type exit to close the DOS window. Restart the rapidshare download job.

This trick may not work if your ISP has assigned you a static IP address. (BSNL assigns a dynamic IP)
OR

Instead of typing this again and again type this in your notepad
ipconfig /flushdns ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew exit

and save the file and give the name as rapidshare.bat

After this anytime you want to do the trick just double click this file
Avoiding Startup Applications

As you know, if you press the SHIFT key on the Windows 9X/Me booting process, no applications in the Startup folder will be activated. Unfortunately, if you perform this process too fast then Windows 9X/Me will be executed on the Safe mode. The better method is holding the CTRL key when the hourglass pointer appears on the screen.

Booting to The Command Prompt

As you know, you can use WinBoost to disable automatic booting to the graphical user interface (see the System and Booting Enhancements section). That is the easiest and the painless way, but probably you want to try another method. To do so, create a file with Notepad. Do not type anything in the file, and save the file to the root directory of the C: drive and name it WIN.BAT. When Windows boots, and finds an empty WIN.BAT file, it will boot the PC to the DOS command prompt. To get to the graphical user interface from the command prompt, just type WIN and press Enter.

Additional Trick!
Now, open Explorer and then rename file Win.com in C:\Windows with something else, such as yourname.com. Starting from now on, you can prevent other person to access your Windows, since you are the only one that can load it by typing yourname.com and then press Enter.

Faster Shutdown

How long the time that you spend to end your Windows session? So much time wasted only to play the Exit Windows's sound. To get faster shutdown or restart, you can delete that sound. To do so, open Control Panel, double click the Sound icon, in the Events list find the "Exit Windows" item, and then choose None in the Name column.

Hacking the Forgotten Password

If you forget your Windows Logon password, all you have to do is press the Esc key when the Password dialog box appears on the screen. Windows 9X/Me will be opened on its default screen. Go to C:\Windows folder, and then delete the .PWL file that uses your name as the logon name. For example, if your logon name is John then delete JOHN.PWL file. Click the Start-Shut Down menu and then click Close all programs and log on as another user option. When the Password dialog box appears on the screen, type the same name but with the new password. This method is also useful if you want to break up another user logon.

More Choices at Windows Setup

If you want to reinstall Windows 9X/Me, type "setup" followed by one or more of these parameters:

/is to run setup without checking the system
/id to run setup without checking available free space
/IQ to run setup without checking cross-linked file and directory integrity
/in to run setup without Network Setup Module
/iw to run setup without copyright confirmation

Presentation at Booting

If you use PowerPoint as your presentation application, you may want to try this tip. First, create your presentation by using PowerPoint. When you have finished, save its file. Run Windows Explorer, go to PowerPoint folder, and then right-click on the POWERPNT.EXE file. Select Create Shortcut, right-click this new shortcut, select Properties, and then go to Shortcut section. To open the presentation in the slide show mode, in the Target column you need add the name of presentation file followed by /s. Move this shortcut into the C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp folder. From now on, your presentation will be automatically opened on Windows Startup.

Printing the BIOS Screen

Make sure that you have turned on your printer. Click on the Start button, click Shut Down, choose Restart the computer, and then click Yes. On the first screen after rebooting, press Del, F1, or F2 depending on what kind of computer that you use. When the BIOS information has appeared on the screen, press PrintScreen button on the keyboard. Your printer will print the information that appears on the screen.

Quick Startup to the DOS mode

If you want to enter the DOS mode on Windows 9X/Me Startup, usually you have to press F8 key when "Starting Windows …" message appears on the screen. From this menu then you choose "Command prompt only" option. To get faster process, try to press Alt+F5 when the "Starting Windows …" message appears on the screen.

Quick Warm Boot

Normally, if you choose Restart on the Shut Down menu, your computer will do the warm boot process. To save the booting time, hold down Shift key while clicking the Yes option.

Removing the Annoying Password

As you know, you can create two or more desktop settings, each one accessed by using a specific password. If this password is annoying, then you can perform these steps to delete the password:

First, open Control Panel, double-click Password icon, click User Profiles tab, and then click the All users of this PC use the same preferences and desktop setting option. Click Change Password tab, and then click Change Windows Passwords. Type your old password and leave the other boxes empty. Click OK, click Close, and then restart Windows 9X/Me

If the first step above fails to delete the password then open Control Panel, double-click Network icon. Click Primary Network Logon list, and then select Windows Logon. Click OK, and then restart your computer.

Showing the Welcome Screen

When you install Windows 9X for the first time, the Welcome dialog box that appears on the screen offers you to read the tips and Windows 9X tour. If you uncheck the "Show this Welcome Screen next time you start Windows" check box, then this dialog box will never shows up anymore. From now on, if you want to show the Welcome screen just click the Start-Run menus, type welcome, and then click OK.

Speeds Up the Booting of the PC

To speeds up the booting of your PC, you can disable the scans for the presence of new floppy drives when Windows starts. To do so, right-click My Computer, click Properties, and then click the Performance tab. Click file system, click the floppy disk tab, and then uncheck search for new floppy drives each time your computer starts. Click OK and OK again.

The Secrets Behind Windows Startup Logo

What is happening behind the scenes while you're looking at the Windows startup logo? You can easily find out by pressing the Esc key when the logo appears. You will see the Windows boot process being narrated by a lot of rapidly scrolling text. You can temporarily stop the boot process by pressing the Pause key on your keyboard. Take your time to read the whole text. To get things rolling again, just press any key on your keyboard.

Tracking the Startup Process

Tracking the startup process is useful to find out why the Windows startup failed. To do so, use WordPad applications to open the BOOTLOG.TXT file in C:\. Click Edit, Find menu to open the Find dialog box. Type "fail" (without quotation mark) in the appropriate box and then click Find Next button. If the Find process stops on a sentence that has the word "fail", you have found the problem that caused Windows startup process failure.

Adding More Files in Startup Disk

Some times you need to add several more files into your Windows Startup Disk, such as device driver files or customized batch files. Normally you need to do this by adding those files manually into the standard Startup disk Windows creates. Here is the quick way, first copy all necessary files or folders to the \Windows\Command\EBD directory. When you want to create a new floppy, run \Windows\Command\Bootdisk.bat. This will format the floppy and copy all the files in the EBD directory.

CD-ROM Access in Safe Mode

Some people think that it is impossible to access CD-ROM while they are in the Windows Safe Mode. Well, they almost correct. The secret is: depress the CTRL key to access the Startup menu right before your PC begins booting up into Windows. Select 'Command Prompt Only,' type "win /d:m" (without the quotation marks) and then press ENTER. Now, Windows should start in Safe Mode with your CD-ROM drivers. However please notice that if you still can't access your CD-ROM drive, it means you need to install the real mode CD-ROM drivers.

Automatic Power On with Double Click

The latest main board and BIOS support ATX facility, it means you can power on your computer with just a double click. To activate this feature: first restart your computer, press Del when the BIOS message appears to enter your CMOS configuration, and then select Integrated Peripherals from main menu. If PS/2 mouse power on disabled, activate it by press page up/ page down key it will became Double-Click. Press Esc key to exit, press F10 to save and exit, and then power off your PC. Now double-click the left mouse button to turn on your PC.

Express Shortcuts

Most people use their computers for several repetitive tasks, such as checking their e-mail boxes, read the latest breaking news or weather reports from Internet. Now you can save your time by placing these tasks shortcuts into a folder in Windows Startup folder. Just make and name a folder on your hard drive, for example 'Express Shortcuts'. Move all the shortcut icons out of the Windows Startup folder and into the 'Express Shortcuts' one. Then, place an 'Express Shortcuts' folder shortcut into the 'Startup' folder; it should be the only shortcut in there. From now on, when Windows boots up, you'll see a small window with all your 'Startup' shortcuts displayed. You can pick and choose which ones you want to launch at that time.

Install Logo as Startup Logo

Still remember with the logo that appears when you first booted into your freshly installed Windows? Now you can have that logo displayed as your Windows Startup logo. All you have to do is extracting the file called SULOGO.SYS from the WIN95_10.CAB cabinet file found in the \WIN95 folder of your Windows 95 installation CD. Or from WIN98_52.CAB cabinet file found in the \WIN98 folder of your Windows installation CD. Use WinZip utility to extract it into your hard disk, and then use “Edit Windows Logo” setting on WinBoost to put it as a Windows Startup Logo.

From the menu bar select Choose File, Save As and give it a name using the BAT extension, for example Startseq.bat. Select a location and then click Save. Right-click Start and choose Open. When the Start window opens, double-click Programs to open it. You should now see the StartUp folder. Now, run Windows Explorer and locate your batch file. Use the right-mouse button to drag its icon to your StartUp folder and choose Create Shortcut(s) Here from the pop-up menu. In the StartUp folder, right-click the new shortcut and choose Properties. When the Properties dialog box opens, click the Shortcut tab. Click the arrow at the right side of the Run list box to expand the list and then select Minimized from the list. Click OK to close the dialog box and save your changes. When you restart the computer, ScanDisk will start first and then followed by Windows Explorer.

Bonus tip:
Another method, rename all the shortcuts using numbers (1, 2, 3, …) and put the number in front of the original name.

Task Wizard, use the Browse option and navigate to C:\Windows\Rundll32.exe. Click OK and finish the wizard including select the start time (time to restart your Windows). Once it's done, right click on the newly created task, click Properties, and add the following parameters in the Run line:

C:\Windows\Rundll32.exe shell32.dll,SHExitWindowsEx 0x2

Make sure the "Start In:" box contains C:\Windows. Also the "Enabled" box at the bottom of the dialog has checked. Click OK and you have finished the job.

Note:
If you want an automatic shutdown instead of an automatic restart, use the same procedure to locate C:\Windows\Rundll.exe file. And then add the following parameters in the Run line:

C:\Windows\Rundll.exe user.exe,exitwindows

Even if you're the only one using your PC, you can take a benefit from it. Simply set up logins for "School", "Work", “Games”, or "Entertainment." Each Desktop could be laid out with a different set of files, folders, and shortcuts.

Run Windows Explorer and go to C:\Windows (if your Windows installed at this folder). Find the following item: Exit To Dos (Shortcut to MS-DOS Program). Highlight it.

Make a backup copy of this file (just in case). To do so, while it is highlighted, press Ctrl+C, then press Ctrl+V. This should create a new file named Copy of Exit To Dos. If anything goes wrong, you can use it to restore the original file.

Now, while Exit To Dos is selected, press Alt+Enter to open its Properties dialog. Select the Program tab. Change the Cmd line field to read as follows:
C:\Windows\Win.com

Press OK to close the dialog. Now, try to restart the computer in the MS-DOS mode (by choosing Shut down on the Start menu and selecting the Restart in MS-DOS mode option). The screen should go black for awhile, but eventually Windows should appear again, not the MS-DOS prompt.

Use this tip to close all opened applications quickly. Click the Start-Run menu, type Taskman, and then click OK to open the Task Manager application. Press and hold the SHIFT key, click the first application from the list, click the last application, and then click the Windows - End Task menu. You can also create a shortcut to the Task Manager in the Start menu.
